Due to RIDOT Weight Restrictions for Walker Street Bridge, RIPTA to Detour Route 53, Starting Wednesday, July 9th
Restrictions apply only to inbound trips
July 3, 2008 - Providence, RI... The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will detour Route 53 (Smithfield Avenue) due to weight restrictions established for the Walker Street Bridge in Lincoln by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT). As a result, all inbound trips on Route 53 will be detoured, starting with the first trip on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 and continue indefinitely.
Route 53 (Smithfield Avenue) will detour as follows:
Inbound: All inbound trips will travel Industrial Circle, make a left onto Walker Street, and a left onto Smithfield Avenue, eliminating service on Chapel Street.
Outbound: All outbound trips will remain the same because the outbound trips on Route 53 do not use the bridge.
For information on RIPTA schedules, customers may call 781-9400.
