Providence, Rhode Island – The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is proposing cost-neutral changes to Route QX and Route 54 to deliver more efficient service and support workforce needs. The proposed changes would restructure a route to align with need and serve a new destination to support job growth. RIPTA has been working closely with Electric Boat to improve service on Route QX. The proposed changes are cost neutral and do not affect RIPTA’s current budget.
RIPTA serves an important role in supporting Rhode Island’s workforce and employers, with 40% of trips bringing riders to or from work. Additionally, over 75,000 students ride to college or high school using RIPTA.
Proposed Service Changes:
Route QX (Quonset Express)
Service will be restructured to originate in Woonsocket, operate express to Providence and Quonset Point (Electric Boat), and better align with the shift schedule.
Route 54 (Lincoln/Woonsocket)
The route will be extended by less than a mile to serve the Stop & Shop in Bellingham, MA. The route extension will provide service for workers and shoppers, while also providing a layoff location with access to restrooms for drivers.
