Service Changes

Winter Is Here!

RIPTA will implement winter service changes effective Saturday, January 18, 2025. RIPTA makes regular service adjustments three times a year in response to seasonal changes and/or passenger use. RIPTA will make changes to Routes 10x, 14, 17, 19, 24L, 27, 28, 29, 35, 55, 72, 78, and Flex 203. These changes include increase of service frequency on some high performing routes, new service to a major employment center and the elimination of a low-performing route segment. Additionally, select afternoon trips traveling from Providence Schools will be modified.

The following service changes will go into effect on Saturday, January 18, 2025:

Route 10x (Amazon/Foster/Scituate)

New daily direct service to the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Johnston with two inbound and two outbound trips, traveling directly to and from Exchange Terrace and the facility.

Route 14 (West Bay)

New daily service to the new Newport Park & Ride lot.

All weekday inbound trips will now depart five minutes earlier.

All Saturday service originating in Narragansett will now originate in Newport.  Narragansett passengers should refer to the Route 69 URI/Galilee and Flex 203 Kingston/Narragansett schedules.

Route 17 (Dyer/Pocasset)

All Sunday trips have been adjusted to depart one (1) minute later, aligning them with a consistent clock-based schedule.

Route 19 (Plainfield/Westminster)

All Sunday trips have been adjusted to depart one (1) minute later, aligning them with a consistent clock-based schedule.

Route 24L (Newport/Fall River/PVD)

New weekday service to the new Newport Park & Ride lot added.

Route 27 (Broadway/Manton)

Weekday service will operate every 30 minutes all day instead of every 28-32 minutes.

Route 28 (Broadway/Hartford)

Some trips will be extended daily to serve the new Amazon Fulfillment Center in Johnston.

Weekday service will operate every 30 minutes all day instead of every 28-32 minutes.

Route 29 (CCRI Warwick/Conimicut)

Due to low ridership, the deviation to Long St. and Strawberry Field Rd. will be eliminated.

Route 35 (Rumford/Newport Ave.)

This route will no longer travel Inbound over I-195. All Inbound trips will operate via the Henderson Bridge through to Angell Street, turning left onto Thayer Street into the East Side Tunnel (this replaces the current detour in effect which uses Gano St.). Outbound trips remain the same. For Route 35 and Route 78 Inbound service to South Water Street, simply remain on bus and ride outbound to South Water St.

Service frequency has been increased from every 50 minutes to every 40-45 minutes all day.

Route 55 (Admiral/Providence College)

A weekday 5:26am Inbound trip from RI College has been added.  This trip will arrive at Kennedy Plaza at 5:52am.

Route 72 (Weeden/Central Falls)

Weekday frequency will be increased from every 24 minutes to every 20 minutes during the day.

Route 78 (Beverage Hill Ave/East Providence)

This route will no longer travel Inbound over I-195. All Inbound trips will operate via the Henderson Bridge through to Angell Street, turning left onto Thayer Street into the East Side Tunnel (this replaces the current detour in effect which uses Gano St.). Outbound trips remain the same. For Route 35 and Route 78 Inbound service to South Water Street, please ride an Outbound trip.

Frequency on weekday trips will be increased from every 50 minutes to every 40-45 minutes all day.

Frequency on Saturday trips will be increased from every 45 minutes to every 35 minutes all day.

Frequency on Sunday trips will be increased from every 90 minutes to every 50 minutes all day.

Flex 203 (URI/Narragansett/South Kingston)

Starting January 21, 2025, this Flex Zone will operate as on-demand service only; RIPTA will no longer use time points. Instead, rides will be available exclusively on demand, making travel even more flexible and convenient. Visit RIPTA.com/FlexOnDemand for more information.

Providence School Service

Select afternoon trips traveling from Hope High School, Mt. Pleasant High School, E-Cubed Academy, and Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School will now operate directly to neighborhood RIPTA Routes without having to transfer in Kennedy Plaza. Visit RIPTA.com/PVDschools for details.
