Beginning Monday, October 24, 2016, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will relocate its Photo Identification Office from Kennedy Plaza in downtown Providence to its main headquarters at 705 Elmwood Avenue, Providence. RIPTA will be able to extend the hours of the Photo Identification Office and it will now be open five days a week. The office will be open from 9 am to noon and 1 pm to 4 pm Monday through Friday.
RIPTA’s Elmwood Avenue headquarters is accessible by Route 20 (Elmwood Ave./T.F. Green Airport) which runs every 15 minutes from downtown Providence on weekdays. The building has ample free parking which will be useful to social service agencies that often need to transport clients to the Photo Identification Office for pass applications, renewals and replacements. The Lost and Found Department is also located at 705 Elmwood Avenue.
“The move will allow us to better use our staff resources and we will be able to keep the Photo Identification Office open five days a week while also continuing to visit Senior Centers around the state every Friday to process applications for reduced fare customers,” said Barbara Polichetti, Director of Public Affairs for RIPTA. Over the past few months, RIPTA has processed applications at both Kennedy Plaza and its headquarters, but that was a temporary measure necessitated by the requirement that all reduced fare pass holders requalify by September 1, 2016, she said. “That was a big undertaking for our staff and our customers alike,” Polichetti said. “Now that we are through with that process, it is time to consolidate more services here at 705 Elmwood Avenue. “
She said that RIPTA will continue to maintain its Ticket Window at Kennedy Plaza and it will still be open six days a week. The Ticket Window hours remain the same at 7 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday, and from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays.
