Press Releases

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is proud to announce the success of its first annual Christmas in July Food Drive, an initiative that brought together its dedicated employees to help alleviate hunger for families and individuals across the state. RIPTA’s effort comes at a crucial time, with children losing access to school meals during the summer and low-income seniors facing high expenses.

During the month-long drive, RIPTA employees demonstrated exceptional generosity, collectively donating 1,000 lbs. of food to the Rhode Island Food Bank. This contribution will provide much-needed support to many Rhode Islanders experiencing food insecurity.

“Our employees’ dedication to supporting our community, especially during such a challenging time, is truly inspiring,” said Christopher Durand, RIPTA interim Chief Executive Officer.  “The success of our Christmas in July Food Drive highlights the compassion and commitment within our organization to making a positive impact in the lives of our fellow Rhode Islanders.”

“The Food Bank is serving more than 82,000 people every month through its network of member food pantries across the state, 15% more people than last year” said Food Bank CEO Andrew Schiff. “We can only do this thanks to the generosity of organizations like RIPTA and its employees. This incredibly successful food drive will help to ensure that all families get the food assistance they need.”
